SPAIN
Spain’s wine industry is as old as that of France. So many of us have been there on holiday that it is not surprising that their wines, particularly those from Rioja, have become so popular. Riojas have
been joined by wines from Navarra, Rueda and other regions as technical improvements and investment bring increased quality. On-trade volumes are increasing by 25% plus per year as more and more restaurants demand a better, more extensive choice.
The current wines from Spain and Portugal are real proof of the benefits of membership of the European Union. Surprisingly the massive grants have been applied to vineyards and machinery for small boutique vineyards as well as large companies. The result is that consumers are buying less in volume but more in quality with sparkling wines still soaring. The three wines we list from Telmo Rodriguez, Al Muvedre, Basa Blanco and MR Moscadel are classic examples coming as they do from three very different areas Alicante, Rueda and Malaga. Another example of Spanish innovation is the stunning Gewurztraminer
from Vinas del Vero.
PORTUGAL
England’s oldest ally and mainly famous
for that remarkable English invention, Vintage
Port. Again, more and more of us have visited
the country and tasted the local produce so
there has been an explosive increase in quality
and quantity.
