Unlike some conservatives in the trade, we firmly believe that South African wines now offer very exciting prospects. Considerable growth in On-Trade sales has occurred approximately 25% a year for the three years before the credit crunch. Currently the country is No. 9 in the U.K. import rankings. We are sure that the level of investment past and present combined with South Africa’s natural advantages means that this country is set to offer the U.K. purchaser continued
excellent value and an increasing variety.

NIEL JOUBERT
Niel Joubert’s property at Paarl produces some 2000 tons of grapes of which just 10% are chosen by their young winemaker to carry the Joubert label. Their entry to the U.K. market with that label in the U.K. is comparatively recent, in 2000, they entered the International Wine Challenge and were awarded a silver medal competing against more expensive wines. John Platter is the South African wine guru who publishes an annual review of virtually all South African wines. He described Neil Joubert’s Chenin Blanc as delicious but advised caution as the excellence of the winemaking hides the alcoholic strength.
LYNGROVE
We chose to list the Lyngrove Collection range of wines because they fulfilled our criteria so very well when we tasted them. The wines are excellent quality and great value for money. The winemaker, Chris Rabie, is young and innovative and dedicated to making wines which have lots of fruit balanced by good acidity and soft tannins. His wines retain the ability to surprise because of their excellence; we were then surprised and gratified to find, after our decision to list them, how highly rated the Lyngrove wines had been in various tastings and competitions even in France!
