New
Zealand Wines
In the 1987 edition of Hugh Johnson’s
Pocket Book of Wine, New Zealand had less than
one page of wines. In the 2006 edition of the
Pocket Book, there are seven. The recent increase
in importance is based on quality not price.
The average imported price of a bottle from
New Zealand remains more than £1 higher
than the average from any other country.
The total quantity of wine produced
here is small compared to most wine-producing
countries but the quality is outstanding. Cool
growing conditions in the world’s most
southerly vineyards (next stop Antarctica) and
high tech winemaking produce benchmark Sauvignon
Blancs, excellent Chardonnays, proper Burgundian
style Pinot Noirs, and textbook Cabernet/Merlot
blends.
We believe that the U.K.’s
appetite for New Zealand wines will continue
and we have increased our own range accordingly.
From Palliser Estate Sauvignon Blanc and Alpha
Domus The Aviator down, the wines are characterised
by pungent aromas, intense fruit and balanced
acidity - just what one wants.
