The
Loire and Alsace Wines
THE LOIRE
An amazing variety of wines are produced along
the banks of the Loire and its tributaries.
Over 250 square miles of vineyards are cultivated.
Muscadet, Sauvignon, Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé
remain benchmarks for crisp, fresh, dry whites,
excellent with anything remotely fishy, with
soft cheese and as an aperitif. Vouvray can
be dry, sweet or sparkling and there is Anjou
Rosé as well. Add on some of the most
beautiful châteaux and it is not surprising
that the area is popular not only for wine but
for visitors.
ALSACE
This is the region that can justifiably call
itself the food and wine capital of Europe.
The wines have a split personality. German names
for grapes producing some of France’s
best dry whites. Accordingly not as popular
yet as they should be.
