House & Entry Level Wines

There has been yet another increase in the range of exclusive labels that we are able to offer customers for the coming year. The successful development of our wine business over the last five years has meant that we
are now able to offer the following exclusive ranges in the North of England:

Sentina Versare (Italy), Beauroy Vin de Table (France), Los Pastos de Las Montanas (Chile), Cape 312 by Gordon’s Bay (South Africa), Simplicity by Vistamar (Chile), Larks’ Ridge (Australia, Chile and South Africa), Borie
Manoux Vin de Pays (France), Tempo (Italy) and State West (California).

Only one of these ranges was offered by H.B. Clark in 2005 which shows how far our customers have taken us in this period. Together with the other wines in the House and Entry Level Selection, we believe these to be another step forward in the strategy to provide customers with the best possible value for money despite the problems caused by exchange rates.

This year sees three major range introductions and two re-launches under our own labels.

Borie Manoux Vin de Pays
We looked for this Vin de Pays range because of customers’ increasing requirement for lower alcohol French House Wines which are varietals not blends. Details of the VDP range appear on pages 17 and 44 and of the maker, Borie-Manoux on page 46.

State West
Also we decided that we needed to be able to offer our own exclusive range of Californian wines, State West. We chose a Merlot, a White Zinfandel and a Chardonnay details of which are on pages 20 and 39.

Los Espinos and Nostros
Last year we introduced wines from Vina Sutil which were attracting a growing following. Unfortunately supply problems meant we have had to look elsewhere. We have found two ranges- Los Espinos- excellent quality and less expensive than the standard Sutil range and Nostros which offer a range
of Reserva and Gran Reserva Chileans again at a better price. Details on pages 21 and 41/43.

Sentina Versare
Our success at building the Versare range with you, our customer over the last few years has enabled us to relaunch the wines this year as Sentina - our own exclusive H.B. Clark brand.

Los Pastos by Las Montanas
The phenomenal success of Las Montanas over the last twelve months has enabled us to negotiate an exclusive new label and classy make-over to relaunch the range this year as Los Pastos.

Last year, the upper limit for House and Entry Level Wines was £4.29 and we listed eighty six wines. Since then, duty has increased by 14p and our upper limit has been forced to £4.49. We would suggest therefore that the upper limit on a £4.49 level wine could be sold at £13.95 a bottle on an average
wine list giving a margin of 62.2%.

Larks’ Ridge
The success of our Wine Development programme over the last five years has led to a number of advantages for our customers in these difficult times for the On-Trade.

In particular, the increase in volumes sold has enabled us to reduce some of the price increases forced on us by exchange rates and rises in the costs of wine, glass and transport. During this period, our strategy has remained the supply of well-made and very good value wines which are as exclusive as possible.

The introduction of the Larks’ Ridge range last year was a very significant step in our Wine Development programme. There are six
Larks’ Ridge wines, all from the New World and all of excellent entry-level quality. They offer a combination of the tried and trusted
such as Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile to the rarer such as the Reserve Chardonnay and Pinotage Merlot from
South Africa.

All the Larks’ Ridge wines have plenty of up-front fruit and show well the characters of their constituent grape varieties.

The juice has been carefully selected by our wine team for quality and value for money and we will are able to oversee the development of the range extension as well as the quality. The Larks’ Ridge range is totally exclusive to H.B. Clark and to H.B. Clark’s customers. We are very pleased with how these wines have been received in the last twelve months by our customers.
