GERMANY
Germany’s entry level fruity whites - Liebfraumilch, Hock, Niersteiner from Rheinhessen and Piesporter from the Mosel – remain extremely popular in all sizes be they 10 or 3 litre Bag-In-Boxes, 1.5 litre or 75cl. bottles or Single Serves. They have of course always been some of the On-Trade’s best selling varieties but there are three relatively new developments which help maintain sales.
Much more wine is now drunk without food and such fruity, aromatic wines offer very easy drinking. They also are a good match for moderately spicy food when served slightly colder than normal. Indeed many prefer them to lager or tea. Finally, the ‘spritzer’ has appeared as a thirst-quencher and this originated in Germany as you can tell from the name.
