German
and Hungarian Wines
GERMANY
What do we do about Germany? The fruity medium
whites - Liebfraumilch, Niersteiner from Rheinhessen
and Piesporter from the Mosel - remain popular
particularly as they offer attractive drinking
often without food.
Indeed the ‘spritzer’
originated in Germany although it is now made
with all sorts of white wines. The basic and
best German wine grape is the Riesling which
is one of the world’s great noble grapes.
The more expensive Rieslings are available to
order.
HUNGARY
It may be surprising but Hungary has some great
wine making traditions. Unfortunately wine did
not prosper under Communism. Since then, a tremendous
range of high-quality great value wines is now
being produced. Over the last fifteen years,
there have been plantings of international grapes
as well as the importing of modern techniques.
