Port
Port drinking in the UK is on the increase and
that’s official! But port only exists
because the English were at war with France,
couldn’t obtain wine supplies so tried
the Portuguese. It was so awful they added brandy
and port was born. This explains why so many
port producers have British names - Cockburn,
Croft, Dow, Graham,
Sandeman, Taylor and Warre.
Vintage Port
If it has been a very good year and there is
not a world depression, the best Port is bottled
after just two years in the
barrel. It is then almost black in colour and
turns one’s tongue black at tastings.
Twenty years or so later it is ready to drink
but needs decanting because of its heavy sediment.
The 1977 vintage is only just ready to drink,
is the vintage of the century and so not cheap.
The 1985 vintage is just about 20 years old
so is ready. Vintage Ports are available to
order.
