Chilean
Wines
It seems very difficult to realise how recently Chilean wines have entered U.K. markets.Twenty years ago, most Chilean wine was very cheap and all consumed domestically. Now we find our customers require an extensive range of Chilean wines especially at House and Entry Level. We have chosen our suppliers very carefully for their ability to produce quality wines with their appropriate varietal flavours which offer good value drinking and this is shown by the quantity of ££ overleaf. This year we have introduced the Vina Sutil range because we wish to present another grower to you who has a similar commitment to quality.
CASA SILVA
Casa Silva is not the best known Chilean wine name in Great Britain but it ought to be. The reason is simple - no other Chilean winery has won as many domestic and international awards for its wines. The business is a family firm with Colchagua vineyards and produces premium wines at unmatchable prices. This was recognised by Robert Parker, the world renowned American wine critic. In his review of Chilean wines, the Casa Silva Cabernet Sauvignon was one of the top five wines and by far the
cheapest. Their Casa Silva Carmenère won the first and subsequent Carmenère competitions. No wonder that we consider the Cabernet Carmenère to be an Absolute Gem. The Casa Silva wines show the benefit of old wines and careful hand-crafted winemaking. Our picture shows the team at work!
CARMENÈRE
It is perhaps odd to be comparing Chile of the New World with St. Emilion, that bastion of the Right Bank of Bordeaux. However Carmenère, now Chile’s own red wine grape, started there along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot etc. Even now Carmenère is one of the limited number of permitted varieties of grape for St.Emilion but is used very rarely.
What happened ?
Merlot is surprisingly a comparatively recent grape. Two hundred years ago, there was more Carmenère. They share the same qualities - luscious fruitiness, forward development and high yields. Along came the dreaded phylloxera disease and Carmenère disappeared apparently. It took until 1994 for it to be realised that a lot of Chilean Merlot was actually Carmenère. Red faces all round for growers and experts alike!!
