California
Wines
California’s unique climate
is ideal for quality wines and their production.
In many ways, it can be said that the ‘New
World’ style of maximising the fruit from
classic French grapes originated here. Robert
Mondavi, in the 1960’s and 1970’s
created the trend for Californian Chardonnays
and Cabernet Sauvignons, now taken on by huge
names such as Blossom Hill and Gallo and lots
of small boutique wineries.
One style of wine is peculiar
to here; ‘Blush’ wine usually made
from White Zinfandel. Originally insulted by
much of the U.K. wine trade as ‘frivolous
rubbish,’ the pretty colour and easy drinkability
have recently made it a fun drink and a refreshing
palatable entry level wine for new drinkers.
Red Zinfandel is also Californian, although
identical to Primitivo in Italy. Its spicy blackberry
richness deserves to be more popular.
