Burgundy
and Beaujolais Wines
Chablis, Pouilly Fuissé
and the Cote d’Or - unique strips of land
which make, at their best, the very greatest
wines both white and red from Chardonnay and
Pinot Noir grapes.
Is there a better Chardonnay wine
than Chablis? Best wine makers do not let the
oak dominate but ensure instead that those lingering
mineral and flint flavours are what we remember.
And it goes so well with food.
The Burgundies from the Cote d’Or
are household names: Chambertin, Vosne Romanée,
Corton and Beaune. Lots of growers and lots
of merchants requiring careful choice. The Maconnais
has rows of Chardonnay vines. Unfortunately
there are only a few producers like Henri Fessy
who make proper, concentrated white wine. Too
much is underflavoured and overoaked, but not
the wine from Fessy. Finally, we come to Beaujolais,
the generic name for the very fruity red wine
made from the Gamay grape. Meant to be drunk
young and often at its best served cool, with
its fruit ‘unjammed’ and above all
not to be taken too seriously.
